Apple device activation lock
An iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch becomes harder for someone else to use or sell when Activation Lock is turned on. While giving you the opportunity to disable Activation Lock for devices your organization owns, managing Activation Lock with an MDM solution enables your organization to take use of its theft-deterrent features.

iPhone and iPad activation locks dependent on the device
When device-based Activation Lock is enabled, the MDM solution—rather than the user—directly communicates with Apple servers to lock or unlock the device. There are no reliances on user actions or the condition of the user’s device because this is purely server-side. When the MDM solution has to enable or disable Activation Lock for the device, it generates its own escrow key and sends it to Apple servers.

Let’s say that your MDM solution is unable to get rid of Activation Lock. Enter the user name and password of the account that created the device enrollment token to connect the MDM solution to Apple School Manager, Apple Business Manager, or Apple Business Essentials on the Activation Lock Screen. A device enrollment manager, site manager, or administrator account (Apple School Manager only) is what this is. You should choose this approach over all others if your devices are allocated in Apple School Manager, Apple Business Manager, or Apple Business

Lock that is activated by the user
User-based Activation Lock allows users to lock devices you own with their individual iCloud accounts, in contrast to device-based Activation Lock.

In this situation, MDM systems can enable Activation Lock on a supervised device controlled by the organization. The MDM solution should retrieve a bypass code generated by the device and save it before allowing the user to enable Activation Lock because it is disabled by default on supervised devices. This bypass code can be used to turn off Activation Lock remotely using MDM or directly on the device when the device needs to be erased and assigned to a new user when the user is unable to authenticate with their Apple ID for any reason, including if they’ve left the organization.
